Our Australian shepherd puppy has one serious vice (other than trying to herd us every time we go up and down the steps).  He’s learned to leave the shoes aside, and mainly sticks with his authorized toys.  But he can’t resist mechanical pencils.  Leave one unattended for a minute, on the couch, on the desk, wherever, and you’ll find him with it crossed between his forepaws, chewing the end off with a serious expression on his face.  Don’t know why, but here went about $60 worth of high-quality writing implements.
